Humboldt Waterkeeper has joined forces with EPIC and Surfrider Foundation to host the Humboldt County "People’s Hearing" on January 18 at 10 am at Eureka's Wharfinger Building. The People's Hearing will be an opportunity to show support for protecting our coast from new offshore oil and gas development. The event will feature comments from Congressman Jared Huffman and other elected officials, and will provide opportunities for public engagement!RSVP to let us know you'll be there! On November 24, the Trump Administration announced the 11th National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Draft Proposed Program, which includes lease sales in areas off of Alaska, California, and the Gulf of Mexico. Lease areas are scheduled off the Northern California coast, including Humboldt County, in 2029. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, known as BOEM, has not scheduled any public hearings in or near affected areas. The threats to our community and state from offshore oil and gas development, including potential oil spills, are not worth the risk. We hope you will join us to advocate for the protection of our coastline, coastal economy, and a clean energy future. In addition to direct harm from oil spills, the proposed 5-year plan fails to consider the long-term effects of new offshore oil and gas drilling from climate change, including extreme rainfall and flash flooding, sea level rise and coastal erosion, wildfires, marine heat waves and ocean acidification.Comments are due January 23 by 8:59 pm PST and must be submitted through the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management website or via U.S. mail. You can submit comments on the BOEM web portal by clicking on the blue COMMENTS button.Docket No. BOEM-2025-0483-0001
