On Tuesday, June 6, the Board of Supervisors will consider a temporary moratorium on billboards and electronic signs while a new sign ordinance is in the works. A temporary moratorium requires a 4/5 vote of the Supervisors, so it is very important to make your voice heard!
In 2020, after the battle over rebuilding a fallen billboard on wetlands along the Elk River, several Supervisors vowed to ban new billboards in open space to protect natural resources and scenic vistas. As the County develops the new ordinance, a moratorium is the only way to prevent the proliferation of new signs under the old rules. The City of Eureka's recent increase in electronic signs illustrates what can happen in the absence of a temporary moratorium.
