On Wednesday, July 12 at 5:30 pm at the Wharfinger Building, the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation, and Conservation District will hold a public scoping hearing on the Notice of Preparation of a Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the proposed Humboldt Bay Marine Terminal in Samoa. The scoping process is the public's earliest opportunity to raise issues to be addressed in the DEIR, including potential environmental impacts, mitigation measures, and feasible alternatives.
Comments should focus on the proposed Humboldt Bay Marine Terminal, which would convert several former lumber mills and docks into a facility for assembling wind turbines, including a heavy lift terminal, new dock, and onshore warehouses. It could potentially handle forest products like logs and chips, or other types of cargo. Separate environmental reviews will be done by state and federal agencies for the construction and operation of offshore wind turbines and the necessary electric transmission lines.
This is a good opportunity to learn about the proposed project and to express support for designing the terminal as a "green port" from the beginning - meaning that it should be as electrified as possible to limit pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the risk of oil spills. We've heard broad support for this concept, which only makes sense - why would anyone want a fossil-fuel burning, noisy, polluting port to support the first floating offshore wind energy development on the West Coast? See our op-ed for more info: Responsible Offshore Wind Development Starts at the Port.
